Pros:
* ability to move such gear as close as possible to the installation * ability for keep such important gear off of a cumbersome container for smaller-scale shows including demos, schools, community outreach, etc. * ability to skin vehicle with graphics, perhaps promotional or suitably vague but cool * possibly easy to find an enthusiastic donor * not really a pro or a con, but FYI, we already have access to wheelchair lift for a van if we need one (but it adds weight) Cons: * might not be as environmentally friendly as we might want, but in many cases, could substitute for a tractor with tilt-bed trailer, which could be even worse * possibly security risk * we may need to fashion a module to place inside a shipping container for longer distances; holding space inside the container might waste space when in van mode

from http://www.buyerzone.com/industrial/storage-containers/kws-used-shipping-containers.html :
You can save as much as 30% to 50% of the cost of a new container by taking a refurbished one off the lot. Not all used shipping containers are created (or recreated) equal. At the low end, you’ll find containers offered “as is” with no implied guarantees and little to no customization, but the smallest price. Higher-end models feature functionality and warranties similar to new containers, but your cost savings will be considerably lower. ... If you can’t find used shipping containers that fit your needs, or you just prefer a new unit, you may be able to lease the new container you want. Leasing allows you to spread your payments over time so you don’t experience the full brunt of the expense. Typical container leases run from 18 to 24 months and the payments can range from $75 to $150. Some businesses may need shipping containers but don’t have long-term plans for them. You can find short-term rentals for just a few dollars a day and you won’t be tied down to the terms of a lease. |
